Fort Lauderdale, Florida
Prior to embarking the ship, or when you return, take time to visit Ft. Lauderdale. This area is famous for its beaches, arts, culture, and events – from shopping on Las Olas Boulevard, to gondola rides on the canals, to the historic riverfront. Just two miles north of Port Everglades, you can experience Fort Lauderdale’s landscaped beachfront promenade, with its signature white wave wall and brick paved path. Enjoy dining on Las Olas Boulevard or the historical districts and visit the mansions and yachts dotting Millionaires Row. Stop by the Stranahan House, a preserved 1900s home furnished with antiques of the era. Or “follow the red brick road” of the Riverwalk, the landscaped park, to the Arts and Entertainment District. Another fun adventure is to the Everglades for an exhilarating air boat excursion.
Amber Cove, Dominican Republic
The Dominican Republic is the second largest and most diverse Caribbean country, known for its warm and hospitable people. Discovered in 1492 by Christopher Columbus, the country overflows with uniquely Dominican specialties such as cigars, rum, chocolate, coffee, merengue, amber and larimar – a beautiful gemstone found only in the Dominican Republic, not to mention over 250 miles of the world’s top beaches! Located on the Dominican Republic’s north coast, the port of Amber Cove is a new phenomenon. Built in 2015, the area was fashioned as an homage to the country’s colonial architecture and features restaurants, bars, shops and more. And don’t miss the neighboring region, known as the Amber Coast for its plethora of the semiprecious stone. Along with golden-sand beaches and dramatic cliffs, there’s the city of Puerto Plata nearby, one of the Caribbean’s oldest, founded in the early 1500s.
St. Thomas, U.S. Virgen Islands
The beautiful scenery alone would fulfill the dreams of most visitors – but there is much more. This laid-back island paradise is also a shopping Shangri-La. Once a haven for merchant, naval and pirate ships, the waterfront warehouses that were filled with pirate booty in the past have been converted into duty-free shops stocked with imported luxuries. Glimmering bays, clear blue water, and powdery sand beaches surround St. Thomas. The stunning Magens Bay is listed as one of the ten most beautiful beaches in the world.
San Juan, Puerto Rico
Historic Old San Juan is Puerto Rico’s bastion of Spanish Colonial architecture with colorful well-preserved buildings and unique wrought iron balconies lining cobblestone streets. Explore the tunnels, dungeons and barracks of San Cristobal, San Felipe del Morro, San Juan de la Cruz and the city walls and the massive El Morro Fortress which guards the harbor and oversees the majestic landscape. Nearby, New San Juan boasts a modern skyline of luxury resort hotels, casinos and shopping malls. Tour the Bacardi headquarters and get a glimpse into the history of the world’s most awarded rum and how it is made and sample the final product. Nature lovers will be in awe of beautiful El Yunque rainforest with its mountains, lakes and waterfalls.
Half Moon Cay, Bahamas
This Bahamian Island captures all the magic of a secluded retreat. Privately owned by Holland America, Half Moon Cay remains largely in its pristine, natural state, with a wonderful Wild Bird Preserve designated by the Bahamian National Trust. Its beach is a two-mile-long, crescent-shaped bay with silky, white sand beaches – the perfect tropical island paradise you dream of. Enjoy swimming and snorkeling, glass-bottom boat rides, and a variety of activities from the Water Sports Center (including kayaks, paddle boats, sailboats, parasailing, deep-sea fishing, and scuba diving).
